Top 3 Writing Competitions in June 2020

In the midst of a global pandemic, whether you’re looking for things to do while in self-isolation or simply want to take your mind off what has been, so far, a dismal new year, writing competitions can offer solace. They can motivate you to continue writing, inspire you to escape into fantasy, but also discipline you to complete a project by upcoming deadlines or for an extra bit of cash.

So, here are our top upcoming writing competitions for you to enter in June 2020. If you feel we have missed out any on this list please let us know in the comments!

The Bath Flash Fiction Award

This renowned international flash fiction competition is fast approaching with a deadline date of the 7th June, but is surely not one to miss. With a £1,000 cash prize for first place, £300 for second, and £100 for third (with £30 for two runners up), there are winners abound in this prestigious award, all for a small entry fee of £7.50 (depending on no. of submissions).

The Narrative Prize

What makes this competition so attractive is not just the $4,000 cash prize on offer, or even the fact that it’s free to enter, it is the sheer variety of content that is permitted. Contestants can provide anything from short stories of 500-2,000 words to novellas, book-length works, poetry, one-act plays, audio prose, audio poetry, or even a collection of different pieces in a manuscript. On top of the attractive cash prize, each winning author will be widely publicised in Narrative. This is not one to ignore, and the deadline date is the 15th June.

The Moth Short Story Prize

Last on our list, but certainly not least, is the Moth Short Story Prize, which has a deadline of the 30th June. This is no competition to shy away from with a first-place prize of €3,000, €250 for second (along with a writing retreat at Circle of Misse), and €1,000 for third. This is one of the only competitions I’ve seen where even coming third place would be well worth submission, especially with an entry fee as low as $15 for as many stories as you like. On top of all of that, the three winning stories will appear in the autumn issue of The Moth.
