Top 3 Writing Competitions in March 2020

As the new year moves unnervingly forwards, don’t let work woes get in the way of your writing career. Competitions are one of the best ways to keep active while working on a longer project and can help reignite your writer’s flame.

Here are our top upcoming writing competitions for you to enter in March 2020. If you feel we have missed out any on this list please let us know in the comments!

The Nelligan Prize for Short Fiction

Established in 2004 in memory of Liza Nelligan, the annual Nelligan contest offers a cash prize of $2,000 and publication in the Colorado Review for the best short story between 2,500 and 12,500 words. The 2020 prize will be judged by Lori Ostlund, and with only a $15 entry fee, this is certainly not one to miss. Deadline for entry is 14th March 2020.

James Jones First Novel Fellowship

Aspiring novelists, or maybe writers hot off the first draft of their 2019 NaNoWriMo project, should be sure to take note of the James Jones First Novel Fellowship award, offering an astonishing $10,000 for just 50 pages of your novel in progress. While the entry fee is $30, which may be steeper than some, it is a price worth paying for your masterpiece in making. Deadline for submission is 15 March 2020.

Fowey Festival Short Story Competition

This modest competition is certainly not one to ignore, with a small entry fee of £5 for 1,500 words and a cash prize of £100 (£75 for 2nd place), this is one of those contests that I always say is “worth a shot”. The theme this time around is “not after midnight”, with a submission deadline of not after midnight on 16th March 2020.
